P O R T U G A L - Where Every Street Tells a Story ❤️ A Country You Must Visit!

I am sitting at Montréal airport, facing a nearly nine-hour layover. Nine hours is a long time—long enough for the mind to wander, for memories to rise from the quiet corners where they have been waiting, and perhaps for a writer to sit still and let those memories find their way onto the page.

As I sit here, my thoughts keep drifting back to the last few days I spent in the beautiful country of Portugal.

Being a writer, I naturally observe the world a little differently. I do not simply visit a place; I try to feel it, listen to it, understand it, and carry a small piece of it home with me. And somehow, Portugal has given me much more than photographs and souvenirs. It has given me stories.

During my journey, I had the privilege of visiting six beautiful cities and towns: Lisbon, Cascais, Sintra, Fátima, Nazaré, and Batalha.

Each place had its own personality, its own rhythm, and its own story. Some stories were written in stone. Others seemed to linger quietly in the streets, waiting for someone to notice.

What touched me most was how deeply Portuguese culture is woven into everyday life.

From the moment you step into the airport, you begin to sense a quiet pride in the country’s heritage, along with values of respect, friendship, warmth, and community. The culture does not feel like something preserved behind glass in a museum.

It feels alive. You see it in the food. You see it in the architecture. You hear it in the music. You feel it in the traditions.

And, most importantly, you experience it in the way people treat one another. The people of Portugal were incredibly generous and welcoming. Again and again, I experienced people going out of their way to help—even with something as simple as giving directions.

Those moments may seem small, but I have learned something through writing: the smallest moments often leave the deepest impressions.

They stay with you. Sometimes, they follow you home. And then there was the food.

Portuguese cuisine was an absolute delight, especially the pastries. There is something almost magical about sitting somewhere in Portugal, enjoying a freshly made pastry, watching people pass by, and suddenly realizing that you are living a moment that you will remember long after the journey is over.

But among all these experiences, One place left me truly speechless: The Ismaili Centre Lisbon.

As someone who writes, I often believe that words can capture almost anything—a feeling, a memory, a person, even a place.

Yet standing in this magnificent space, I found myself searching for words and coming up empty.

It was almost as if the buildings themselves had taken language away from me.

The richness of the architecture, the extraordinary attention to detail, and the vision behind this remarkable place is difficult to describe. The legacy and vision of His Highness the Aga Khan IV continue to inspire, creating spaces where beauty, knowledge, culture, and service come together in a way that feels both timeless and deeply human.

Today, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, the present Aga Khan, is continuing that profound vision and carrying it forward, making it broader, more inclusive, and more far-reaching for generations to come.

And perhaps that is the true power of a vision. A vision does not truly live simply because someone once imagined it. It lives because others carry it forward. It grows. It reaches new communities. It opens doors that may not yet be visible from where we stand.

Perhaps that is what great architecture does. It does not simply occupy space. It creates emotion. It tells a story. It preserves memory. And sometimes, it makes you stop speaking altogether.

I leave Portugal with a heart overflowing with gratitude.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to visit such a wonderful country, experience its culture, meet its people, taste its food, walk through its historic streets, and create memories that I know will remain with me for a very long time.

I am equally grateful to all my wonderful guides and fellow group members who, together, made this journey so memorable.

Every conversation. Every laugh. Every shared experience. Every unexpected moment.

Each one added another page to a story I will cherish.

I have attached some of the photographs I took during my journey. I know photographs can never fully capture the soul of a place. They can preserve a face, a doorway, a beautiful building, or a shadow falling across an old wall—but the feeling itself always remains just beyond the frame.

Still, I hope these photographs offer you a small glimpse of the beauty I experienced.

Portugal, you have been more than a vacation.

You have been a story. A beautiful story of culture, kindness, history, architecture, friendship, and unforgettable moments.

And like every good story, I leave wanting to return someday and discover a few more chapters.

Until then, I will carry a little piece of Portugal with me—in my photographs, in my memories, and perhaps, most importantly, in the pages I have yet to write.

Obrigado pela sua hospitalidade, Portugal! ❤️

Thank you for your wonderful hospitality, Portugal.

With love and gratitude,

Best!

Akbar
